When was the slavery abolished in Colombia?

Through of a law, the Colombian slavery was abolished on July 21st, 1851; however, it was only effect in January 1st, 1852.  Even though, it was a big step, it did not mean the Liberty and Equality of Colombian Slaves because the slaves never receive anything whereas their owners receive a material compensation for the work force that they were leaving. Even now, great portion of Africancolombians do not feel equal. Despite the Constitution grant liberty and equality the real world is different.

What are the main divisions of the Colombian population?

These are Amerindio –Amerindian- (Native Population), Spain and European People (Colonizers), and African People (Slaves).

The result of the mix of these groups was three ethnic groups:

Mestizo:       Indigenous and Whites

Mulato:                 Africans and Whites

Zambo:         Africans and Indigenous
