FOR AMIABLE, YOUR EXAMPLE IS A LITTLE REDUNDANT. BASICALLY YOU ARE SAYING THAT YOU LIKE FRIENDS WHO ARE FRIENDLY TO YOU. THIS SEEMS SOMEWHAT OBVIOUS, DOESN’T IT?

IF YOU WERE WRITING ABOUT CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD FRIEND (OR OTHER PERSON), YOU COULD INCLUDE “AMIABILITY”

RE: ELABORATE: I PREFER TO DO ELABORATE WORK BY HAND THAN BY MACHINE B/C IT IS MORE EFFICIENT. MACHINES MAKE MORE MISTAKES IN DETAILED TASKS AND THEREFORE I SAVE TIME BY DOING THE WORK BY HAND.

mowrk:

*con•gen•ial /kndinil/ adj. (formal)

1 (of a person) pleasant to spend time with because their interests and character are similar to your own: a congenial colleague
2 ~ (to sb) (of a place, job, etc.) pleasant because it suits your character: a congenial working environment
3 ~ (to sth) (formal) suitable for sth: a situation that was congenial to the expression of nationalist opinions

Jiha’s emalple EXAMPLE: I prefer to spend time with friends because we can share our different kinds of hobbies or interests. I like spending time with people who have congenial taste in many ways. Spending time with them is beneficial for me. In the conversation, I can get information or learn new things.

*ami•able /emibl/ adj. pleasant; friendly and easy to like agreeable: an amiable tone of voice Her parents seemed very amiable.

Jiha’s example: I prefer to live in a new city because I can enjoy and experience many new things. I think that first hand experience is the best way to learn something than learning with books. If I move a new town, I can make friends who are amiable for me and have different backgrounds from me.

*elab•or•ate adj., verb
<img height="10" alt=">" src="http://www.oup.com/images/elt/oald7/psym.gif"/> /lbrt/ [usually before noun] very complicated and detailed; carefully prepared and organized: elaborate designs She had prepared a very elaborate meal. an elaborate computer system
elab•or•ate•ly adv.: an elaborately decorated room elab•or•ate•ness noun [U]

Jiha’s example: I prefer to work with my hands because it is more efficient to do elaborate works than a machine work.

Technology has made the world a better place to live.

shimj:

All people live in advanced technology nowadays. Many people know how much technology improved but they do not know how it gives many unfavorable condition in the world. Technology has made the world a worse place to live in many cases.

-First, technology has disadvantage in a war. As time goes by, there are more wars. To protect own countries, whole countries try to make new stong weapons for warfare. A long time ago, people only used sword, fire, and refles in battles. Today, many countries use bomb that kill plenteous civilians at once. Since many countries make more new powerful weapons to protect themselves, more people die in each war. [IF THEY ARE PROTECTING THEMSELVES, THEY WOULD NOT DIE. CHANGE THE VERB, “PROTECT”.]

-Second, technology has aggravated the environment. To prosper own country, many countries cut trees to make area to build buildings. This made environment in harm. Also, the world produces exorbitant cars since it has made people easy to move people from one place to the other. This made people to use more gas and that cause the air pollution. Because people try to make the world better place, it made bad environment.

In conclusion, technology has made the world worse by making more weapons and making environment worse.

Some people learn by doing things. Other people learn by reading about things, others learn by listening to people talk about things. Which of these methods of learning is best for you? Use specific examples to support of your choice.

LISTING VS LISTENINH

mowrk:

I prefer to learn something from listing people. If I learn by listening to people talk about things, it will be much more fun and exciting than reading books. Also, I can learn not only knowledge but also other things that can not learn in the books through other people’s experiences.

First, learning by listening to people talk is efficient. When I study with books, if something does not understand [IF I DO NOT UNDERSTAND SOMETHING] , I have to find someone who can help me to answer it. However, if I have a question during listing from people, I can ask them directly. Also, I can ask them more detail stories I want to know or even ask them tell slowly. It will help me to understand something.

Second, if I learn from stories of people, it will be much fun. Reading books sometimes need patient to keep it up and easy to be tired. The lessons from first hand experience of people are active [ENGAGING] and easy to understand.

Next, I can learn something from people’s mistakes. When I listen something from others, I can memorize their mistakes or something wrong. And then I will try not to make the same mistakes already they made. It will be very good lessons in my life.

people have different ways of escaping stress and difficulties of modern life. some read, some excercise, others work in their gardens. what do you think are the best ways of reducing stress? use specifiv details to expain your choice.

tmtredneck:

it is an unavoidable fact that people have to have stresses during they are studying, working or living. another true is if there is a problem existing, there will be one or more alternatives to solve it. people are doing different things to reduce stress such as read books, do exercises, or do garden works. in my opinion, the most effective way to escape stresses is doing exercises, the reason for my choice is that exercises can help people to improve healthy, refresh your mind, and kill time effectively.

HOW IS KILLING TIME RELATED TO STRESS REDUCTION?

If you could invent something new, what produce would you develop? Use specific details to explain why this invention is needed.

rosebian:

I believe that people usually made mistake in the past even though it were callous unintentional or purposive. [GRAMMAR IN FIRST SENTENCE. S/V AGREE. ON PURPOSE] Therefore, many people want to fix their mistake, but sometimes they do not have change to fix it. If I can invent something new, I will develop the time machine which can help people live in the present go back to the past in the short time.

First reason why I expect to make the time machine is that help people go back to the past to visit death [DEAD VS DEATH]people. Many people feel disappointed because they can not meet their family member in the last time when their family member died. If the death person had something to entrust to somebody, they do not have time or chance to say it. That may become the longingly remember of the death person. The time machine can give the death person a change to say something with their important person.

Second reason is that the time machine can give a change to people who make an mistake go back to the past and fix their mistake. Some people made some mistake that make them feel regret in all of their life. If people knew about their mistake and they want to fix it, should we give them a opportunity to change it?

The last reason is somebody lost their opportunity for their job. The time machine can help them go back to get their opportunity. If people can get back their opportunity, they will be more respectful to it. [CAN YOU DEVELOP THIS LAST POINT MORE?]

In conclusion, I think that the time machine is the useful invention in the future

Choose one of the following transportation vehicles and explain why you think it has changed people lives: automobiles, bicycles, airplanes. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer

vanvu:

Thesis statement: In my opinion, one vehicles [#] that it has changed people lives is the airplanes because of its speed, space, and interesting experience.

Certainly, almost [MOST] people adhere [ADHERE TO THE FACT THAT] that the most significant benefit of the airplane is the speed. The average speed of a large commercial jet airliner is about 500 mph. It only takes approximately 17 hours for the distance 8,429 miles from Vietnam to the U.S. Thousands of miles are crossed within hours! That’s amazing! Before the airplane’s invention, travelling from one country to another country was a dream. Journeys between continents would take months by ships, which were the fastest method after cars.

Another favor of the airplane is the space. It can carry up to 250 passengers with many goods. In contrast, automobiles or bicycles just occupy [HOLD - LOOK UP OCCUPY] a few people, and small packages as well. Therefore, the airplane opens many posibility for the human such as travelling, business. In another way, it also motivate to develop our economy through international exchanges.

Either [WHETHER] you decided [PRESENT TENSE] to travel for pleasure or work or any other reasons, airplane is the best choice for you. It’s very interesting and exciting experience, you can’t describe the feeling when you are in the sky. It seems that you walk on the cloud and race with birds. Thanks to the technology that made us feel such experiences.[FRAGMENT]

I prefer study with people because usually when I study alone, I need more patients and feel tired easily. However, when I study with group, it is fun and I can even more learn many tings through study with people. There are reasons why I prefer the group study.

First, if I study with classmates, I can reduce some mistakes that I can not find by myself. When I have to solve some difficult problems in my subject, I sometimes can not find any clue for those. Also, I adhere to my own ways, but those are not always correct. If I collect many ideas from people, I can make better answers. I think this is the best way to reduce mistakes or make the answers.

Next, I can learn social skill through the group study. As I study alone, I do not need to persuade other people or understand them. Unfortunately, in that way, I can not learn that how to communicate with people or how to adjust my opinion against them. If I study with my classmates, I have to discuss and sometimes argue to understand them. Also, I can learn not only knowledge from textbook but also the manners for living. For example, I should keep the meeting time because if I am late, someone complains about it and can loose their time due to me. That kind of lesson is much more important for me to live with people than just knowledge from textbooks.

Finally, group study is much more interesting and fun. When I have to study some boring subjects, it sometimes is hard to keep it by myself. I will be tired soon, or even give up the study. However, I study with someone else; they can help me and understand some difficult parts of the subjects. Study with fun and exciting is very efficient way to learn something.

If you loose interests in your study, I recommend you group study. It will give you much more fun and even make you like study. You can just enjoy with people and talk to them about the subjects you have to solve. They can help you understand those. I think group study is one of the best ways to study efficiently.

Should a city try to preserve its old, historic buildings or destroy them and replace them with mordern buildings?

JIWON, DID YOU POST ON ANOTHER TOPIC LAST WEEK AS INSTRUCTED?

FOR EVERYONE: THE MORE YOU POST, THE MORE PREPARED YOU WILL BE FOR THE FINAL.

rosebian:

shimj:

A city should try to preserve its old, historic buildings by not destroying it.

One reason we have to keep old building is because it represents the beauty of own country. For example, there are tourists to see and feel many architecture by traveling other countries. If many historical buildings were replaced by modern buildings, threre will be no tourists. It stops many people from learning other cultures.

Another reason we have to keep and preserve old and historical buildings is because buildings are one of essential elements that scientists observe. The design, pattern, artifacts, and all the remains from the old buildings are all significant to archaeologists. Therefore, the historic buildings are important to some people because it remind them lives of the past.

Hi Jiwon, i think you opinions about a city should to preserve historic buiding very well. You have a strong ideas even though it is a liitle short. However, i think you should change the last sentence of the second paragraph. Reason can be that people not stop learning other cultures if historic building is detroyed. They can have different ways for learning other cultures. I think you should change the word “stop” to “decrease”. Finally, you paragraph is very well. Thanks for posting…

Explain your choice, using specific reasons and details.

IN YOUR INTRO, THERE ARE 2 SENTENCES, ONE FOR EACH SIDE. WHILE YOUR SECOND SENTENCE IS LONGER, I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT YOU EMPHASIZE THAT THIS IS YOUR OPINION.

IN THE STRESS PARAGRAPH, YOU COULD TALK ABOUT HOW STRESS LEADS TO ILLNESS AND ILLNESS TAKES TIME AND MONEY.

YOU COULD ALSO SAY THAT PEOPLE WHO WORK A LOT AND MAKE A LOT OF MONEY MAY NOT HAVE TIME TO SPEND THE MONEY.

rosebian:

Nowadays, some people choose a high-paying job with long hours that would give them little time with your family and friend because of money. However, many people choose a lower paying job with long hours that would give them more time with their family and friends because they know that spend time with their family and friends more important than to earn money, and the more people work, the more they get stress.

Most people choose a lower paying job because they want to have time with their family and their friends who are very important for their life. The time goes very fast, so if people not have a respect to their family. It will be too late that they repent when they lose the important person of their life. Moreover, we do not have enough time to pay attention to family and friends. Therefore, the more people spend time with their family, the happier they are.

Another reason that people choose a lower paying job is the stress. The time is very fair for everybody, because people may earn more money when they work long hours than another. It also means that they get more responsible than another who work in shorter hours. Worker will get more and more tired which can make them to become a painful person. Finally, people should work in lower paying job with short hours in order to have a relaxing life.

“ALTHOUGH SOME STUDENTS MAY SAY THAT IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME TO TAKE SUBJECTS NOT RELATED TO THEIR MAJOR, I WOULD ARGUE THAT THIS TIME AND MONEY IS VERY WELL SPENT SINCE STUDENTS NEED THE GUIDANCE FROM TEACHERS TO LEARN HOW TO THINK CRITICALLY ABOUT SUBJECTS THAT THEY KNOW LITTLE ABOUT. UNDERGRADUATE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ARE GENERALLY NOT ABLE TO SELF-TEACH AND THEREFORE BROAD UNIVERSITY CURRICULUMS ARE DESIGNED TO HELP STUDENTS GAIN EXPOSURE TO A VARIETY OF TOPICS. FURTHERMORE, STUDENTS MAY FIND THAT OTHER SUBJECTS RELATE TO THEIR MAJOR. FOR EXAMPLE, A STUDENT WHO WANTS TO BECOME A NURSE MAY FIND THAT LEARNING ABOUT PUBLIC POLICY MAY SHAPE HOW S/HE VIEWS THE FIELD OF NURSING.”

rosebian:

I think you have very good and strong ideas. However, many people will not disagree with you opinion such as students may waste their money because of tuition for unnecessary subject, or they will get more stress, so i think you should have argument in your third paragraph.

: Universities should require students to take classes in many subjects for three reasons.

1.The mine purpose of universities is giving a opportunity to accumulate knowledge of all students. Students try to learn more by taking classes. However, some students want to take classes only what they want. This will not help to collect their knowledge in many ways. Therefore, universities should require students to take classes in many subjects.

2. students will be given more options to choose their futures. If students take many different subjects, they will realize what they really want to do in the future. While they are learning, they will find which is good or which is not good for themselves.

3.It will give them wide sence by taking many subjects. People do not know what is going to happen in the future. If students learn as much as they can, they will know many kinds of information and they can apply to their real lives when they need.

YOU WRITE “OLD-FASHIONED” IN THE FIRST BODY PARAGRAPH. I COULD ARGUE THAT FASHION CHANGES VERY OFTEN SO THAT YOU MIGHT NEED TO BUY CLOTHES FREQUENTLY. I MIGHT CHANGE THIS OR ADD “…UNTIL IT WEARS OUT”.

“STUFF” IS A NON-COUNT NOUN.

INSTEAD OF “WEATHER ALLERGY”, I WOULD WRITE “WEATHER SENSITIVITY” AS I DON’T THINK YOU ARE ACTUALLY ALLERGIC TO THE WEATHER SINCE YOU GET USED TO IT.

vanvu:

I lived in the south of Vietnam where the weather is warm for a whole year. It is always about 80F (27C). I can go to the beach anytime I want without knowing how the weather is. Certainly, I prefer to live in places that have the same climate all year long. The reasons are that I can save money and time, do not get sick because of changing weather.

The first benefit I can get from that choice is saving money. When I lived in my country, I could wear the same T-shirts for a long time. I did not to buy a new one until it was old-fashioned. However, living in America where have four seasons, I have to buy clothes for each season. Especially, winter clothes are very expensive. Moreover, clothes are just a small issue for changing weather. We have many stuffs to care about when the next season comes. For example, people rush to buy housewares, blankets, curtains etc. to match the seasons. Besides, it take time to prepare a lot of things for new weather such as packing old objects, and arranging new ones. Everyday people must watch or listen the weather tomorrow at least once. I never do that in Vietnam.

Changing the weather is my nightmare. Due to weather allergy, my nose always is stuffed and runny about two weeks when the new season begins. I cannot breath and living without medicine and tissues. It is very difficult to concentrate on my studying or doing something. I feel tired and only want to stay on my bed. I have been in Richmond since last May. Fortunately, the summer had the same weather in Vietnam. Nevertheless, I could recognise the changes since last week that the fall began. The symptons of my allergy happened. I guess that they will happen to me three times a year for four different seasons.

To sum up, I like to live in the place that only have the same weather for a whole year. Saving time and money, never gettting sicks are my desires. Furthermore, I can go anywhere or do anyting I want like traveling to beaches, mountains without noticing the changing weather.

BOTH PARAGRAPHS TALK ABOUT TIME (WHICH IS FINE AS THE PARAGRAPHS ARE DIFFERENT ENOUGH). YOU COULD RETURN TO THE IDEA THAT INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY WILL SAVE YOU MORE MONEY IN THE END AND THEREFORE, IT MIGHT ACTUALLY BE MORE ECONOMICAL TO HIRE AN EXPERIENCED WORKER AT A HIGHER SALARY.

FOR ANOTHER PARAGRAPH, YOU COULD ADD THAT AN EXPERIENCED WORKER WILL BRING HIS/HER EXPERIENCE FROM ANOTHER COMPANY AND MAY BE ABLE TO TEACH YOUR COMPANY HOW TO DO THINGS BETTER.

tpqr11:

tmtredneck:

If i were the boss of a company, i would rather hire experienced employees at higher salary than inexperienced employees at lower salary.

One of the reasons that makes me think like that is hiring a experienced worked, you won’t need to spend time n money to train him. in business, time is very important and it means money therefore a good businessman can’t waste any seconds to do craps like that, because his opponents can steal the customers away from him quickly.

another reason is the effectiveness during working. it is so true that a experienced worker can do more and better works than a inexperienced employee. with a same amount of works and time, a employee with more experience in the job can solve faster and more than the one without experience.

i agree your two points that businessman does not want to waste the time and experienced employees is better than inexperienced employee are very signficant factors for businessman, but you need one other supporting idea.

Other like to be with friends mostof the time. Do you prefer to spend your time alone or with friends?

YOU CLEARLY HAVE THREE POINTS BUT I WONDER HOW YOU WILL DEVELOP YOUR IDEA ON LONELINESS. THE SECOND SENTENCE UNDER POINT 1 DOESN’T SEEM TO RELATE TO LONELINESS IN PARTICULAR. WHY IS IT PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT NOT TO FEEL LONELY? YOU COULD ARGUE THAT LONELINESS CAN LEAD TO DEPRESSION OR YOU COULD TALK ABOUT HOW HUMANS ARE SOCIAL ANIMALS (AND THAT PEOPLE WHO ARE AROUND OTHER PEOPLE TEND TO LIVE LONGER THAN THOSE WHO ARE ALONE.)

sunglee:

Thesis : I prefer to spen most of my time with friends because keep me frome feeling lonely, it is enjoyable to talk with, friends teach me new things.

1. Friends keep me from feeling lonely. if i want to do something, i invite a friend or friends and we do it together.

2. I like talking wiht my friends. if l have a problem, i talk it over with my friends and they help me solve.

3. I learn a lot from my friends. I can learn many new things and interesting things by sharing with my friends.
